해설문

국문

도산십이곡은 퇴계 선생께서 도산서당을 지은 지 4년만이자 65세 때인 1565년(명종 20년)에 지으신 12수로 된 시조로서 선생의 친필 목판본이 전해져 오고있다.

오른쪽 시비 전 6곡은 마음이 사물과 자연에 접하여 일어나는 감흥에 따라 선생 자신의 뜻을 나타낸 언지(言志)이고, 왼쪽 시비 후 6곡은 학문과 덕행을 실천하는 내용을 나타낸 언학(言學)으로 되어 있다.

한시는 읊조릴 수는 있어도 노래할 수 없기 때문에 한글로 시를 써서 노래 부르고 춤추게 함으로써 어리석고 천박한 마음을 씻어내고 자연과 하나가 되어 성품과 정서를 맑고 깨끗하게 하고자 하였다.

퇴계 선생 탄신 500주년이 되는 2001년을 맞아 그 해 10월 안동시에서 서예가 황재국이 새로 쓴 글씨를 새겨 이곳에 건립하였다.

Steles of the Twelve Songs of Tosan

These two steles were erected in 2001 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Yi Hwang (1501-1570, pen name: Toegye), a renowned scholar of the Joseon period (1392-1910). They are inscribed with the Twelve Songs of Dosan, a collection of 12 sijo poems composed in 1565 by Yi Hwang. The stele on the right features six “odes” praising nature and reflecting Yi Hwang’s intentions, while the stele on the left features six “speeches” mentioning the practices of dignity and academics. The inscriptions were calligraphed by Hwang Jae-guk.

Notably, Yi Hwang wrote this poetry in the Korean vernacular (hangeul) rather than classical Chinese so that his teachings could be conveyed to all people. Furthermore, Yi Hwang hoped that by singing and dancing along with his poems, people could wash themselves of their foolishness and become one with nature, which in turn would make their character and worldview become pure and clean.

영문 해설 내용

이 두 비석은 조선의 대학자인 이황(1501-1570, 호: 퇴계)의 탄신 500주년을 기념하여 2001년에 건립하였다. 비석에는 이황이 1565년에 지은 12수의 한글 시조 ‘도산십이곡’이 새겨져 있다. 오른쪽 비석에는 자연을 예찬하면서 이황의 뜻을 나타낸 ‘언지’의 여섯 곡이, 왼쪽 비석에는 학문과 덕행의 실천에 대해 말하는 ‘언학’의 여섯 곡이 새겨져 있다. 글씨는 서예가 황재국이 썼다.

이황은 이 시조를 한문이 아닌 한글로 써서 누구에게나 쉽게 가르침을 전하고자 하였다. 또한 이 시를 노래로 부르며 춤추게 함으로써 어리석은 마음을 씻어내고 자연과 하나가 되어 성품과 정서를 맑고 깨끗하게 하고자 하였다.
