대한민국 수준원점은 우리나라의 국토 높이를 측정하는 기준점으로, 평균 해수면과의 차이를 측량하여 육지에 설치해 놓은 시설물이다. 이 기준이 되는 평균 해수면(해발 0m)은 1914년부터 3년 동안 인천 앞바다의 바닷물 높낮이를 관측하여 정한 평균값이다.
원래 인천광역시 중구에 있었으나 6·25 전쟁으로 인한 시설물 훼손 및 인천 내항 지역의 개발 등으로 1963년에 현재 위치로 이전하였다. 이곳의 공식 높이는 평균 해수면으로부터 26.6871m이다. 이 수준원점을 기준으로 전국에 세부 기준점인 수준점을 약 6,000개를 설치하였고, 이를 통해 각종 건설 공사, 국토 개발, 재해 방지 등에 필요한 높이 값을 제공한다.
영문
This structure marks the official national reference point for measuring elevation across the Republic of Korea. It was established based on the difference in height between land and mean sea level (MSL), which was calculated by observing tidal fluctuations off the coast of Incheon over a three-year period starting in 1914.
The original marker was located in Jung-gu, Incheon. However, due to damage during the Korean War (1950-1953) and the development of Incheon Port, the structure was relocated to its current site in 1963. Its official elevation is 26.6871 m above mean sea level.
Using this vertical datum as a reference, approximately 6,000 secondary benchmarks have been installed throughout the country. These benchmarks provide essential elevation data used in construction, national land development, disaster prevention, and other geographic applications.
