국문

  • 단양 원주이씨 효열각은 조선 후기 이상문(李尙文, 1697～1767)의 효자문과 이민열(李民烈)의 처 전의 이씨(全義 李氏, 1812～1885) 열녀문 등 2개 전각으로 구성되어 있고, 각각 1834년과 1884년에 세워졌다.
  • 효열각은 조선후기 양반의 신분제적 요소가 크게 흔들리는 것을 웅변적으로 보여 주고, 1992년 매포읍 도시계획에 의해 현재의 위치로 옮겨졌다.

Commemorative Pavilions of the Wonju Yi Clan, Danyang

These pavilions were built to commemorate members of the Wonju Yi clan, namely, Yi Sang-mun (1697-1767) for his filial devotion, and Lady Yi (1812-1885) of the Jeonui Yi clan—the wife of the Wonju Yi clan member Yi Min-yeol—for her matrimonial devotion. During the Joseon period (1392-1910), commemorative plaques or steles were bestowed by the government to honor a person’s patriotic loyalty, filial devotion, or matrimonial devotion and were meant to be hung on red gates or in pavilions in front of the honored family’s home.

Among the three structures, the one at the center was built in 1834 to house the plaque of Yi Sang-mun, while the one on the right was built in 1884 to house the plaque of Lady Yi. The two pavilions were relocated to the current site in 1992 due to urban development. The structure on the far left is an auxiliary building that used to house the portraits of the clan’s ancestors.

영문 해설 내용

이곳은 원주이씨 가문 이상문(1697-1767)의 효행과 이민열의 처 전의이씨(1812-1885)의 열행을 기리는 정려를 모신 곳이다. 조선시대에는 나라에서 충신, 효자, 열녀에게 정려 현판 또는 정려비를 내렸으며, 정려를 받은 사람의 집 앞에 붉은 문을 세우거나 정려각을 세워 모셨다.

세 건물 중 가운데는 1834년에 세운 이상문의 효자문이고 오른쪽이 1884년에 세운 전의이씨의 열녀문이다. 두 정려각은 도시 개발에 따라 1992년 지금의 위치로 옮겨졌다. 맨 왼쪽의 건물은 문중 선조들의 초상화를 모시던 부속건물이다.
