논개사당은 임진왜란때 진주 촉석루에서 일본군 장수 게야무라 로꾸스케를 껴안고 의롭게 죽은 주논개(朱論介, 1574-1593)의 영정을 모신 사당이다.

이 사당은 원래 1955년 남산공원에 지어졌으나, 1974년 현재의 위치로 확장 이전하였다. 논개의 영정은 윤여환 화백이 그렸으며, 현판은 함태영(咸台永)선생이 부통령으로 재직할 때 쓴 것이다.

장수군에서는 의암 주논개가 태어난 (음)9월3일을 군민의 날로 정하여 논개의 숭고한 애국정신을 기리는 추모대제를 지내고 있다.

영문

Nongae's Shrine

This shrine features a portrait of Nongae (1574-1593), a female entertainer of the Joseon period. During the Imjin War (1592-1598), when the Japanese celebrated their victory in Jinju, she joined the party to serve Japanese generals. On a rocky cliff over Namgang River, she embraced Japanese general Keyamura Rokusuke and threw herself into the river, killing them both.

Her shrine was first built in 1955 within the Namsan Park area, but was expanded and relocated to the current site in 1974. The portrait was painted by Yun Yeo-hwan (1953- ), and the wooden plaque of the shrine’s name was written by former Vice President Ham Tae-yeong (1873-1964).

A memorial service is held on September 3 of the lunar calendar, Nongae’s birthday, to honor her patriotic spirit.
