Stone Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra) of Hwaeomsa Temple, Gurye

This is a collection of fragmented stone plates on which the Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra) is inscribed. They were made during the Unified Silla period (668-935).

It is said that before Gakhwangjeon Hall was built, there was another worship hall on that spot, built by the eminent monk Uisang (625-702) of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE). Inside, the walls of that hall were decorated with green stone plates that had the Avatamsaka Sutra engraved on them. However, the hall and its stone sutra walls were destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. These remaining fragments of the sutra eventually changed to a grey-brown and dark grey color.

In 1702, when the construction of Gakhwangjeon Hall was finished, the fragments of the sutra were collected and left outdoors next to the hall until 1938, when during a renovation, they were sorted and packed in boxes. However, during the Korean War (1950-1953), the boxes were destroyed, and the sutra fragments were again left outdoors unprotected. It was only in 1961 that they were sorted and collected again. A total of 14,242 fragments were distributed among 163 boxes. They are now kept in the temple's museum.

Although completely shattered, this sutra still holds its value as one of the only stone sutras made in Korea. It also is a valuable material for research on the history of Buddhism, epigraphy, and calligraphy during the Unified Silla period.
