보제루의 오른쪽을 돌아서 오르는 이곳은 화엄사의 중심 영역이다. 주위를 둘러싼 전각의 지붕이 꽃잎처럼 아름다운 곡선을 그려내어 마치 연꽃 속에 있는 듯한 아늑함을 준다. 대웅전과 동오층석탑, 각황전과 서오층석탑으로 이어지는 2개의 축은 두 개의 일탑일금당(一塔一金堂)을 한 곳에 모아 둔 듯하다.

이는 주불전인 대웅전보다 각황전이 훨씬 큰 기형적 구조를 해결하기 위해 의도된 것으로 화엄사만의 매력이라고 할 수 있다.

영문

Main Courtyard of Hwaeomsa Temple

The main courtyard of Hwaeomsa Temple is a sacred area that is surrounded by the temple's most important buildings, including its two main worship halls, namely Daeungjeon Hall and Gakhwangjeon Hall.

Because the main courtyard of Buddhist temples is a particularly sacred place, the pathway to enter this area is always designed with care. In most Korean temples, which have one main worship hall, one must pass underneath a pavilion and then climb up stairs to enter the courtyard. This design slowly reveals the main worship hall and forces the visitor to bow their body. However, because Hwaeomsa has not one, but two main worship halls, the path was designed differently so that both buildings can be revealed at the same time. Rather than passing underneath Bojeru Pavilion, one must take the stairs to the right of the pavilion. This allows the smaller Daeungjeon Hall, positioned directly across the courtyard, and the larger Gakhwangjeon Hall, positioned to the left of the courtyard, to appear about the same size upon first sight.

Apart from these two main worship halls, the main courtyard features other important buildings and monuments, such as a pair of five-story stone pagodas and Korea's largest extant stone lantern.

영문 해설 내용

중심영역은 대웅전과 각황전이라는 두 개의 주요 전각을 비롯하여, 화엄사에서 가장 중요한 건물들로 둘러싸여 있는 공간이다.

사찰의 중심영역은 특히 신성한 곳이기 때문에, 이 영역으로 들어가는 길은 항상 세심하게 설계된다. 주불전이 하나인 대부분의 한국 사찰에서는 문루의 아래를 지나 계단을 오르면 중심영역으로 진입할 수 있다. 이렇게 하면 주불전이 천천히 모습을 드러내고, 방문객으로 하여금 자신의 몸을 낮추게 만들기 때문이다. 그러나 화엄사에는 중심전각이 둘이기 때문에, 진입로가 다르게 설계되어 두 건물이 동시에 드러나도록 하였다. 보제루의 아래를 통과하지 않고, 오른쪽에 있는 계단을 이용해서 중심영영역으로 진입하게 된다. 이렇게 하면 마당 바로 맞은 편에 있는 대웅전과 왼쪽 멀리에 있는 훨씬 큰 각황전 건물이 거의 비슷한 크기로 보이게 된다.

이 두 중심전각 외에도, 중심영역에는 동·서5층석탑과 한국 최대의 석등 등 여러 주요 건조물들이 있다.
