국문

괘불지주(괘불석주)는 큰법당 앞에 세워져 행사 때 괘불을 거는 석주물이다. 보통 석가탄신일, 천도재 등 큰 법회나 의식을 거행할 때 사찰내 넓은 야외에서 법회를 여는 경우가 많은데 이 법회를 ‘야단법석’이라고 한다. 흔히 여러 사람이 몹시 떠들썩하고 소란스럽게 법석을 떠는 것을 ‘야단법석’이라고 하는데 이 말은 여기에서 나온 것이다.

괘불은 평상시에 말아서 불단 뒤의 궤(机)에 보관하고 있다가 특별한 행사가 있을 경우 불전 앞마당에 괘불대를 설치하고 괘불을 걸어 야외법회를 진행한다. 현재 괘불(화엄사영산회괘불탱)은 화엄사성보박물관에 보관중이다.

Stone Supports for the Buddhist Hanging Painting

Flagpole supports are a pair of stone pillars set up to support a flagpole which was used to mark Buddhist temple precincts by hanging flags or to celebrate special events and large gatherings by hanging banners. Hanging banner paintings are displayed outdoors on special occasions such as the Buddha’s birthday, outdoor rites, and the funerals of eminent monks. They typically measure more than 10 m in height.

Usually, a hanging banner painting is rolled up and placed in a long storage chest located behind the altar inside the main worship hall. In the morning when events are held, it is moved to the main courtyard in front of of the main hall. After a ceremony to unroll and hang the painting is completed, the day's outdoor events may begin.

The Buddhist banner painting of Hwaeomsa Temple depicts the scene of the Buddha’s lecture at Vulture Peak and is stored in the temple's museum. A small reproduction of the painting is hung in Gakhwangjeon Hall on the left wall.

영문 해설 내용

괘불지주는 괘불을 야외에 걸 수 있도록 세우는 돌기둥을 말한다. 괘불은 대부분 높이가 10m 이상 되는 대형 불화이며, 석가탄신일이나 천도재와 같이 큰 법회나 의식을 행할 때 야외에 걸어놓고 예배를 드리는 데 쓰였다.

평상시에는 말아서 궤에 넣고, 궤를 법당 내 불단 뒤에 걸어놓는다. 그리고 행사가 있는 날 오전에 법당 앞마당으로 옮겨와서 펼쳐 거는 의식을 치른 후 야외 행사를 진행한다.

화엄사의 괘불은 석가모니가 영취산에서 설법하는 장면을 묘사하고 있으며, 현재 성보박물관에 보관 중이다. 각황전 내부의 왼쪽 벽면에는 이 괘불탱의 축소판 복제품이 걸려 있다.
