조선 시대에는 창덕궁·창경궁 쪽과 종묘 구역이 서로 연결되어 있었으나 일제강점기인 1932년에 이곳을 관통하는 도로가 개설되면서 지맥이 끊기고 이 지역의 원래 모습이 크게 훼손되었다. 일제는 이에 대한 비판을 무마하고자 관덕교라는 이름의 콘크리트 육교를 만들어 연결 통로로 사용토록 하고 양쪽에 현대식 출입문을 설치하였다.

이 육교는 율곡로 도로 구조를 개선하는 사업을 실시하면서 2012년에 철거되었으며, 육교의 난간석 등은 서울역사박물관 마당에 옮겨 전시 중이며, 현장에는 북쪽 교대(橋臺)의 일부가 남아 있다.

Gwandeokgyo Bridge Site

This is the former site of Gwandeokgyo Bridge, a concrete pedestrian overpass built in 1932 during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). The bridge was demolished in 2012 as part of the Yulgok-ro Road Development Project.

During the colonial period, Japanese authorities designed a road to bisect a major royal complex of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), which consisted of the two eastern royal palaces, Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung, to the north and the royal shrine, Jongmyo, to the south. The construction of this road not only disrupted the feng shui energy of the area, but also undermined the sanctity of the Joseon dynasty. In response to this criticism, the colonial authorities built Gwandeokgyo Bridge to facilitate passage between the palaces and shrine.

The Yulgok-ro Road Development Project (2010-2022) sought to undo this damage by turning a section of Yulgok-ro Road into a tunnel so that the area between the palaces and the shrine could be restored to its original appearance. The northern arch of Gwandeokgyo Bridge was left in place as a reminder of the colonial history, while other parts of the bridge, such as the stone handrails, were moved to the Seoul Museum of History.

이곳은 일제강점기인 1932년 북쪽의 창덕궁, 창경궁과 남쪽의 종묘를 잇기 위해 만들어진 콘크리트 육교인 관덕교가 있던 곳이다. 창덕궁, 창경궁과 종묘는 원래 하나의 영역으로 이어져 있었는데, 일제가 오늘날의 율곡로를 만들면서 둘로 나뉘게 되었다.

이 육교는 율곡로 도로 구조를 개선하는 사업을 실시하면서 2012년에 철거되었다. 북쪽 교대(橋臺)의 일부가 현장에 남아 있으며, 다른 부재들은 서울역사박물관으로 옮겨졌다.
