The Inje Catholic Church's Origins as a Communist Assembly Hall
Following independence from Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945), the Korean peninsula was divided at the 38th parallel by U.S. and Soviet forces. This site, situated north of the 38th parallel, was the site of an assembly hall of the North Korean Communist Party. During the Korean War (1950-1953), the roof of the assembly hall was destroyed in an artillery attack and only parts of the walls survived. By the end of the war, the area had come into the control of South Korean forces. When the church building was built in 1956, the rubble was cleaned out and the church was constructed atop the remaining concrete floor and walls. This unique feature of Inje Catholic Church makes it a symbol of Korea’s 20th-century history.
