해설문

국문

이곳은 신라의 성장과 발전과정에서 대단히 의미 있는 장소로 여겨진다. 1988년 경주고적발굴조사단의 발굴조사와 2006년에 국립경주문화재연구소의 추가 조사로 모두 15동의 건물지를 확인하였다.

대형건물지의 배치는 중국 주(周)나라의 칠묘*와 닮았으며, 담장형 석렬(石列)은 중국의 영벽(影壁)*과 유사하다. 석렬 남쪽에 지진구(地鎭具)*로 보이는 5점의 큰 항아리가 일렬로 묻혀있어 건물지들은 신라의 오묘(五廟)와 같은 제의시설로 추정하기도 한다. 특히 문헌과 구전으로만 전해오던 황금빛이 나는 황칠(黃漆) 안료가 10호 건물지의 지진구에서 처음으로 확인되어 많은 사람들의 주목을 받았다. 조성시기는 출토된 유물로 보아 신라가 삼국을 통일한 7세기 말 이후로 추정된다.

영문

Large Building Site in Hwangnam-dong, Gyeongju

This archeological site, located next to Cheomseongdae Observatory and several royal tombs, consists of the remains of 15 buildings. Among them, 12 are oriented on a roughly south-north axis and form an overall rectangular layout, suggesting they were part of a single, large structure. This structure is presumed to have been a state shrine or ritual facility of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) dating to the late 7th century or later.

The site was excavated in 1988 and 2006. The layout of the site is similar to the royal ancestral shrine of the Chinese Zhou dynasty (1046-256 BCE). Five large earthenware jars aligned in a row were found buried to the south of the remains of a stone wall and are presumed to be ritual objects used to ward off evil spirits. Many artifacts were excavated from the site, including various kinds of bowls, plates, jars, and roof tiles. Most notable among these was a lidded bowl with a tall foot discovered at Building Site No. 10 that was painted with a natural golden pigment (hwangchil), which had thus far only been known of via historic documents and oral history.
