해설문

국문

연지암 대웅전 한켠에 봉안되어 있는 여래입상이다. 배모양으로 다듬은 광배(光背) 앞면에 돋을새김으로 조각하였다. 머리 위에는 상투 모양의 머리묶음이 있고, 귀가 매우 길게 표현되어 있다. 지금의 얼굴은 손상된 것을 수리하였다. 체구는 균형이 잘 잡힌 당당한 모습이며, 양 어깨부터 감싸내린 옷자락이 몸 전체를 덮고 있다. 양손을 가슴 앞에까지 들었는데 왼손에는 약그릇으로 보이는 지물이 있다. 광배는 머리 광배와 몸 광배를 구분하여 도드라지게 새기고 바깥부분에 불꽃무늬를 새겨 넣었다.

지금의 연지암은 어느 보살이 밭 가운데서 목탁소리가 들려오는 꿈을 꾸고 직접 가서 파보니 이 석불이 나와 보살의 이름을 따서 절 이름을 지었다고 한다.

영문

Stone Standing Buddha in Hwalseong-ri, Gyeongju

This stone statue enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall of Yeonjiam Hermitage depicts a standing buddha and his halo.

The head and body halos are defined with clear lines and are surrounded by flame patterns to create an oval shape. There is a large protuberance on the top of the buddha’s head which symbolizes his wisdom. The face was damaged and repaired at some point. The body is well-proportioned and dignified. The robes drape across both shoulders and cover the entire body. The buddha holds a medicine bowl in his left hand.

There is a legend relating to the discovery of this statue. One day, a woman named Yeonji had a dream in which the sound of a wooden handbell was coming from the middle of a field. When she went to the field and began digging, she discovered this statue. The hermitage was then named after her.
