해설문
국문
주상절리는 지표로 분출한 용암이 식을 때 수축작용에 의해 수직의 돌기둥 모양으로 갈라져서 생긴 틈을 말한다. 이곳은 신생대 제3기의 에오세(5,400만 년 전)에서 마이오세(460만 년 전) 사이에 경주와 울산 해안지역의 활발했던 화산활동에 의해 형성된 것이다.
이곳 해변의 1.7㎞에 걸쳐 10m가 넘는 정교한 돌기둥들이 분포하는데 주름치마, 부채꼴, 꽃봉오리 모양 등 형태가 다양하다. 보통 절리가 지표면에 수직으로 발달하는데 반해 이곳 절리는 수평 방향이 흔하고, 부채꼴 형태도 발달했음이 특징이다. 세 방향의 절리가 서로 만나면서 같은 곳에 발달한 것 역시 드문 경우이다.
주상절리가 보이는 해안을 따라 몽돌길, 야생화길, 등대길, 데크길 등 테마로와 주상절리 전 구간을 산책할 수 있는 파도소리길이 조성되어 있다.

Columnar Joint in Yangnam, Gyeongju
A columnar joint is a geological structure that is created as volcanic rock cools, contracts, and cracks, resulting in the formation of a regular array of vertical polygonal columns.
These columnar joints, located along 1.7 km of coastline in Yangnam, are presumed to have formed between 54 and 4.6 million years ago during the Tertiary Period when the southwest corner of today’s Korean Peninsula was the site of significant volcanic activity. Compared to other columnar joints in Korea, these are large in scale and diverse in form. The joints are shaped like pleated skirts, hand fans, and flower buds, and some have columns measuring over 10 m in length. Of particular note are the large horizontal fan-shaped joints. These horizontal formations are rare, as columnar joints typically form on a vertical plane.
