Historic Site Related to Son Sun, Gyeongju

This site commemorates the filial devotion of Son Sun, who lived during the reign of King Heungdeok (r. 826-836) of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE).

According to the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk yusa), Son Sun and his wife worked hard to feed his elderly widowed mother, but their young child kept taking the grandmother’s food, causing her to go hungry. Angered by this, Son Sun suggested that they bury the child, as it was easy to have another child but impossible to have another mother. The couple went to a nearby mountain and began digging a hole. However, as they were digging, they unearthed a stone bell, which they interpreted as a sign from the heavens to not bury the child. When they hung the bell up at their home and rung it, the sound could be heard all the way in the royal palace. King Heungdeok considered this to be a sign that the heavens were acknowledging Son Sun’s filial devotion and thus bestowed upon Son Sun a house and a yearly supply of rice. Son Sun’s former house was turned into a Buddhist temple named Honghyosa (“Temple of Magnanimous Filial Piety”) to enshrine the bell, but the bell was stolen in the 890s.
