해설문
국문
부서져 주변에 흩어져 있던 불상과 보살상을 1923년에 모아 다시 세웠다. 인근에서 선방사(禪房寺)라고 새겨진 돌이 발견되어 ‘선방사 삼존불’이라 부르기도 했지만, 지금은 지명을 따서 배동 삼존불이라 한다.
미소를 머금은 어린아이와 같은 얼굴 모습이 큰 특징이다. 중앙의 불상은 상투모양의 머리가 이중으로 되어 있고 네모난 얼굴이 통통하다. 목이 거의 없는 원통형의 체구에 손이 큼직한데, 왼손은 내리고 오른손은 올리고 있다. 왼쪽의 보살상은 작은 부처가 새겨진 보관을 쓰고 왼손에 정병(淨甁)을 들어 관음보살로 보인다. 오른쪽에 있는 보살상은 굵은 목걸이와 구슬장식으로 발목까지 치장하고 있다. 왼쪽 보살상과 차이가 있어 원래 함께 만든 것이 아니라고 보기도 한다.
어린아이의 순진무구한 얼굴과 몸을 연상시키는 뛰어난 작품으로 7세기 신라 불상조각의 대표작으로 평가된다.
영문
Stone Standing Buddha Triad in Bae-dong, Gyeongju
These three stone statues, located on the northwest foot of Namsan Mountain, depict a Buddhist triad and are presumed to date to the 7th century during the Silla period (57 BCE-935 CE). The statues were originally found fallen over and scattered in the vicinity. In 1923, they were gathered in this place. The wooden pavilion protecting the statues was built in 1988.
In the center is the principal buddha, who stands with a halo behind his entire body. He has a large protuberance at the top of his head which symbolizes his wisdom. His face is wide and square. His hands are held near the chest palms facing outward, with his left hand pointing down and his right hand pointing up. The buddha is flanked by two bodhisattvas who have an overall similar shape with symmetrical postures. The bodhisattva on the left wears a headdress and a long beaded necklace. In his left hand, he holds a bottle of pure water. The bodhisattva on the right is adorned with jewelry such as a thick necklace and beaded accessories. This statue is significantly more eroded than its counterpart, and its original pedestal is also missing.
The nearby discovery of a stone carved with the name “Seonbangsa” suggests that this was once the site of a Buddhist temple with that name.

- 본존불에 대한 설명 요소들은 좀 랜덤한 것 같아요. 얼굴에 대한 설명 더 하거나 빼는 것이 좋을 것 같고요. 육계가 좀 특이한다고 해서 이 부분을 설명하는 것이 차라리 좋지 않을까 싶은데, 독자는 어차피 육계의 일반 모습을 뭔지 모르면 이 부분도 의미가 없겠네요.
