해설문

국문

사찰에서 의례나 행사가 열릴 때 깃발을 높이 달아 알렸는데, 그 깃발을 당(幢), 깃대를 당간(幢竿), 긴 당간이 흔들리지 않게 지탱해주는 지지대를 당간지주라 한다. 대개 사찰의 입구에 세워졌다.

이 당간지주는 남쪽의 황룡사지(皇龍寺址, 사적 제6호)와 북쪽의 분황사(芬皇寺, 사적 제548호) 사이에 있다. 분황사에서 남쪽으로 50m 지점이어서 소속사찰을 분황사로 추정하고 있다.

양 기둥에는 상·중·하 3곳에 지름 15cm의 구멍[杆孔]이 있고, 두 기둥 사이에 당간을 받쳤던 당간받침돌[竿臺石]이 남아 있는데, 거북 모양을 새겨 독특하다. 경주 지역의 다른 당간지주들과 비교할 때, 통일신라에서도 이른 시기에 건립되었을 것으로 추정된다.

영문

Flagpole Supports of Guhwang-dong, Gyeongju

Flagpole supports are a pair of stone pillars that fastened a flagpole in place. Such flagpoles were used to mark Buddhist temple precincts by flying flags or to celebrate special events and large gatherings by hanging banners.

These flagpole supports are presumed to have been made in the early period of Unified Silla (668-935) as a part of Bunhwangsa Temple (Historic Site No. 548). They have a simple design without decoration. On the sides of each pillar, there are three round holes, each measuring 15 cm in diameter. Metal belts were inserted into these holes to secure the erected flagpole. At the base between the two pillars is a stone into which the flagpole would have been placed. This stone is shaped like a tortoise, which is an unusual design.
