해설문
국문
이 석등은 흥륜사지(興輪寺址, 사적 제15호)에서 옮겨왔다고 전해진다. 일반적으로 석등은 불을 밝혀두는 화사석(火舍石)을 중심으로, 받침과 지붕 머리장식으로 구성되는데, 이 석등은 화사석과 지붕돌이 없어졌다.
8각의 바닥돌에는 면마다 안상(眼象)을 2개씩 얕게 새겼다. 아래받침돌은 사각의 각 면에 3구씩 좌상이 있어 십이지신상(十二支神像)으로 보기도 한다. 윗단은 연꽃무늬를 둘렀다. 길쭉한 8각 기둥 위에 놓인 윗받침돌에도 연꽃무늬를 장식해 놓았다. 위로 올라갈수록 규모가 줄어들고 있는 두 개의 연꽃받침도 밑면에 연꽃무늬를 조각해 두었다. 꼭대기에는 꽃봉오리 모양의 장식이 남아 있다.
영문
Stone Lantern in Gyo-dong, Gyeongju
Stone lanterns are placed in Buddhist temples to be used for light offerings to the Buddha. They are typically placed in front of the main worship hall or a pagoda and consist of a tier base, a pillar, a light chamber, and roof. However, this stone lantern in Gyo-dong is missing its light chamber and roof.
This stone lantern is said to have been moved to its current location from Heungnyunsa Temple Site (Historic Site No. 15), around 800 m to the west. The octagonal platform on which the lantern stands is engraved with foliate patterns. The lower tier of the base is square and features depictions of three seated zodiac animals on each side. The upper tier is engraved with lotus designs, as are the support stones above the stone pillar. There is also a lotus bud-shaped decorative top.
