Joining Together for Art: The Jeonnam-Gwangju Art Collective Alliance
Narrative
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Art Collective Alliance emerged out of the May 18 Democratic Uprising and the Minjung art movement of the 1980s. The alliance consisted of ten university-based art groups, including Gaettangsoe, Tomal, Joseon Misul Teo, and Ttangkkeut from Chosun University, Sinparam, Bullabi, Chang, Uri Misul Yeonguhoe from Chonnam National University, Sotteo from Gwangju National University of Education, and May from Honam University. Their works, such as “Nine Screens-Struggle For the People’s Survival and the June Uprising”, highlighted their commitment to using art as a tool for social commentary and change. Through their connection to historical events like the May 18 Democratic Uprising, they influenced broader movements like the popular art movement and university art movement, cementing their place in the fight for democracy and human rights in their community.
