Minjung Art Forms: Murals

Narrative

One of the key forms of Minjung art, or “people’s art,” is the mural, or “byeokgeurim”. A number of murals were made to convey and commemorate the events of the May 18 Democratic Uprising. Notable among them is the work “Gwangju People’s Uprising”, which is displayed at Chonnam National University College of Education Building No. 1 and was created by the Mural Promotion Committee. Measuring 10 in width and 16 m in height, the mural was made over five days in June 1990 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the uprising.
