The Faces of Gwangju: Foreigners 》Capturing Gwangju, Korea, and Asia in Fiction: Missionary and Author Lois Swineheart

Story

  • Lois Hawks Swinehart (1869-1971) was an American missionary who lived in Gwangju together with her husband, Martin Luther Swinehart (1847-1957) from 1911 to 1937.
  • Swinehart founded Neel Girl's School together with Elizabeth Shepping in 1918, while her husband led the construction of Winsborough Hall of Speer Memorial Girls' School (and later oversaw the construction of Ewha Girls' School buildings in Seoul).
  • What is notable about Swinehart was that she was a prolific writer of fiction, and through her works we can catch a glimpse of early 20th century Korea through the eyes of a Western missionary.
  • Among her works are Jane in the Orient (1924), which is based on her experiences in Japan and Korea, and Sarangie: A Child of Chosen (1926)[1], which is a short tale of a young Korean girl who was taken in by a Western missionary, as well as Korea Calls!: A Story of the Eastern Mission Field (1929).
  • She also wrote a biography about her colleague Elizabeth Shepping in Glorious Living: Informal Sketches of Seven Women Missionaries of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. (1937), which was compiled by Hallie Paxon Winsborough after whom the aforementioned Winsborough Hall is named.
