Yangdong Market: Where History and Everyday Life Meet

Narrative

Yangdong Market is a representative traditional market of Gwangju. In the past, it was known as Keun Market (“Big Market”) and served as a central hub of local commerce. Today, it stands as a symbolic space of Gwangju’s everyday culture and urban landscape, recognized as part of the Eight Scenic Views of Seo-gu.

The market is also closely connected to the May 18 Democratic Uprising of 1980. During that time, Gwangju jumeokbap (rice ball) was prepared and provided at Yangdong Market for the civilian militias, an act remembered as a symbol of solidarity and sharing.

One section of the market is the Skate Food Street of Yangdong Market, known for dishes such as hongeo samhap (skate, pork belly, and kimchi). Through this traditional food culture, Yangdong Market embodies layers of historical memory and everyday culinary life, holding within it the passage of time in Gwangju.
