Gwangju, Stories Etched in Buddhist Temples

Narrative

Gwangju is a city where the spirit and practice of Buddhism have long been rooted. The temples nestled along the slopes of Mudeungsan Mountain are more than just places of worship—they are sites where art, education, democracy, and memory converge. From the Buddhist heritages of Wonhyosa Temple and Jeungsimsa Temple to the educational mission of Hyangnimsa Temple, the healing symbolism of Yaksaam Hermitage, and the artistic and democratic legacy of Munbinjeongsa Temple, each site reflects a unique role in the community. Together, these five temples shape the cultural and spiritual landscape of Gwangju.
