The People Behind the Names of Gwangju’s Roads

Narrative

Across the districts of Gwangju, roads bear the names of individuals who shaped the city’s history, culture, and spirit. From righteous army leaders of the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598 to devoted Confucian scholars, modern artists, missionaries, and pro-democracy activists, each road serves as a living memorial to their lives and contributions. In Dong-gu, Seo-gu, Nam-gu, Buk-gu, and Gwangsan-gu, these figures are remembered not only by name but also through shrines, museums, and historical sites that preserve their legacy. The roads connect different eras and values, reflecting the city’s enduring respect for justice, learning, creativity, service, and sacrifice. Together, they form a narrative map of Gwangju’s past, embedded in the paths of the present.
