Overlooking Gwangju: Mudeungsan Mountain 》Scenic Beauty: Mudeungsan's Columnar Joints

Story

  • A columnar joint is a geological structure that forms as volcanic rock cools, contracts, and cracks, resulting in the formation of a regular array of multi-sided columns.
  • The columnar joints of Mudeungsan Mountain formed in the Cretaceous period. Among the columnar joints, Seoseokdae and Ipseokdae Rocks are known to be the tallest in all of South Korea.
  • Due to both their geological significance and their scenic beauty, the columnar joints of Mudeungsan Mountain were designated as a Natural Monument in 2005.
