May 18 Memorial Park: Remembering the Democratic Uprising

May 18 Memorial Park serves as a central site of remembrance for the May 18th Democratization Movement of 1980, when Gwangju citizens courageously resisted military rule in their struggle for democracy. Located on Yeouisan Mountain, the park stands on the former site of Sangmudae Command Post, transforming a place once associated with military authority into a space dedicated to democratic ideals.
The park is administered by The May 18 Foundation, which oversees its role in preserving the memory of the democratic uprising. Within its grounds, the park houses several significant monuments and cultural sites. Danseongjeon Hall is situated within the park, alongside the Memorial Monument for Martyr Pyo Jeong-du’s Revolutionary Spirit, which was relocated to the park to honor this anti-American independence activist.
Natural features complement the memorial elements, including Seyeonji Pond, which provides a space for reflection. The artistic work “Ah! Gwangju, Eternal Light!” captures the spirit of the movement through creative expression.
The park is recognized as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Seo-gu District, highlighting its significance beyond its memorial function. Visitors can follow the Passion Course, a walking route designed to help people encounter the May fighters who devoted their passion to democratization.
