Chungjang-dong: Gwangju’s Commercial Center
Narrative
Chungjang-ro Road stands as Gwangju’s primary commercial thoroughfare, carrying both historical significance and modern vitality. This central street takes its name from Kim Deok-ryeong (1567-1596), a military commander whose posthumous title "Chungjang" (loyal and brave) honors his service during the Japanese invasions of Korea.
The street serves as the backbone of Gwangju’s commercial district, connecting various markets and cultural venues. Daein Market and Yangdong Market operate nearby, contributing to the area’s bustling trade atmosphere. The Gwangju Theater adds cultural depth to the commercial landscape, while the Gwangju Central Library provides educational resources to the community.
Modern urban planning has transformed parts of the district through the Chungjang Commercial District Renaissance Project, which includes the development of Chungjang 22. This complex houses the Chungjang History and Culture Center and connects to specialized shopping areas like Wedding Preparation Street, where couples traditionally purchase items for marriage.
The area features several themed streets that reflect both traditional commerce and contemporary culture. Printing Street represents the district’s historical role in Gwangju’s publishing industry, while K-Pop Star Street celebrates modern Korean popular culture. This street, created by the city to promote downtown tourism, begins at the Gwangju Chungjang-ro Post Office.
In these ways, Chungjang-dong continues to evolve as Gwangju’s commercial heart, balancing historical heritage with contemporary urban development.
