Gwangju Bus 518 was numbered in commemoration of the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Uprising of 1980. The route passes Geumnam-ro Road, the central stage of the uprising, and continues to the National Asian Culture Center, Gwangju Station, and Chonnam National University. It also includes sites of remembrance and mourning such as the May 18th National Cemetery and the May 18 Liberty Park. For this reason, Route 518 functions as a city tour line connecting key historical sites related to the May 18 Democratic Uprising. Along everyday urban spaces, the route links the history of democracy with the present.
