Gwangju’s Signature Bakeries

Narrative

Bakeries in Gwangju have developed their own unique brands and products, forming an important part of the region’s food culture. Among them, Gungjeon Bakery and Verviers have long stood as iconic establishments. Gungjeon Bakery was founded in 1973 by Jang Ryeo-ja on Chungjang-ro Road, and later passed on to his eldest son, Yun Jae-seon, who continued to grow the business. It became widely known for distinctive items such as “Dinosaur Egg Bread” and “Butterfly Pie,” and has been introduced as one of Korea’s Top Five Bakeries, symbolizing Gwangju’s confectionery tradition. Verviers, founded by Ma Ok-cheon, recognized as a Gwangju Master Artisan, derives its name from the Belgian “Gateau de Verviers.” The bakery has introduced its own signature products, including “MaWang Pie,” contributing to the diversity and evolution of Gwangju’s bakery culture.
