World Camera and Movie Museum: The Hidden Gem of Dongnidan-gil

Narrative

The World Camera and Movie Museum is a comprehensive exhibition space where visitors can explore the history of photography and film at a glance. Curator Yi Su-hwan spent over twenty years traveling around the world, collecting more than 1,800 cameras and various types of video equipment, which are now displayed here. The exhibition includes the lucida, invented in 1807 by the British scientist William Hyde Wollaston; the zoetrope, designed in 1834 by William George Horner; and the daguerreotype, the first camera created in 1839. The museum also features an interactive space where visitors can experience the principle of the camera obscura.

The second and third exhibition halls operate as the Movie Museum, showcasing the filmmaking process through display cameras and projectors. The museum is also part of the Dongmyeong Dongnidan Stamp Tour, allowing visitors to enjoy it alongside the Dongnidan-gil Cafe Street, making it one of Gwangju’s notable cultural destinations.
