Translation
Poem 56 : (Okyang)
Mountain is high but standing under the pine tree,
River is deep but flowing above the sand.
Flowers bloom with the rain of last night,
Flowers fall with the wind of this morning.
- Discussion Questions:
+ (Kyrie) Since you use the word "under" to describe the mountain's location, I think it would be a nice pair if you use "over" or "above" to describe the river's location.
Poem 57 : (Ewa)
Severe drought receives sweet rain
In a foreign village meeting an old friend.
Drawing a tiger, still difficult to draw its bone
Knowing a person, yet not to know his heart.
- Discussion Questions:
Poem 58 : (Althea Volpe)
Once the water leaves it doesn’t come back
Once the words come out it’s difficult to take them back
Learning a great number of arts is like carring a treasure
Desiring things is like the dust in an early morning
- Discussion Questions:
+ On the third line, instead of "literature", I've used the word "Arts" because I think it could be a more inclusive term. Can it be considered as a mistake?
(YO) It is fitting to a certain degree, considering how "arts" was used in the West, especially in the classical education. The only difficulty is that there is 藝 that corresponds to "Arts" and we have used “arts" to translate 藝 (e.g., 六藝 "Six Arts").
(YO) I think 學文千載寶 is "Learning literature is treasure of a thousand years".
