Definition

조선을 건국한 제1대 국왕 태조(太祖) 이성계(李成桂)를 모신 왕릉이다. 왕릉은 단릉으로 조성되어 있다. 3면으로 된 곡장 안에 봉분을 만들고 중앙에 상석과 장명등을, 양 옆에는 망주석 한 쌍을 두었다. 또 한 단 아래에는 문인석과 석마가, 마지막 단에는 무인석과 석마가 시립하고 있다. 봉분 아래는 12지신상이 새겨진 화강함 병풍석이 둘러싸고 있으며, 태조의 고향 함흥을 그리는 억새풀이 봉분을 감싸고 있다.
