Chungdong First Methodist Church was established in 1885 by the American missionary Henry Appenzeller. It originally began in a traditional Korean building, but was replaced by the he Western-inspired Bethel Chapel in 1898. The chapel was Korea’s first Protestant church and is the only extant 19th century church building in Korea. It is located near the American Legation.
