Definition
‘삼비(三備)’는 ‘세 가지를 갖춘다’는 뜻이다. 왕세자가 장차 훌륭한 정치를 하기 위해 갖추어야 할 세 가지 덕목을 이야기하는 것으로 여겨진다. ‘세가지 덕목’이란 ‘세 가지 훌륭한 일[三善]’로서 세자가 어렸을 때 ‘신하의 입장에서 임금을 섬기는 것’, ‘자식의 입장에서 부모를 섬기는 것’, ‘어린 사람의 입장에서 어른을 섬기는 것’을 가리킨다. 『예기』 「문왕세자(文王世子)」 편에서“한 가지 일을 행하여서 세 가지 훌륭한 일을 모두 얻는 자는 오직 세자뿐이다(行一物而三善皆得者, 唯世子而已)”라고 하고서 위의 세 가지 훌륭한 일에 대해 자세하게 설명한다.
