필성문 현판

Definition

‘필성(弼成)’은 ‘도와서 이룬다’는 뜻이다. ‘필(弼)’은 ‘도우다’, ‘성’은‘이루다’는 뜻이다. 『서경』의 「익직(益稷)」 편에서 출처를 찾을 수 있다. 이 글에서 “계(啓)가 앙앙하고 울어대도 저는 그를 자식으로서 사랑해 주지 못하고 토공(土功)을 크게 헤아려 오복(五服)의 제도를 도와 이루되[弼成] 5천 리에 이르게 하고 각 주(州)마다 열두 명의 제후를 두었으며 밖으로 사해에 이르기까지 모두 다섯 수령을 세우니, 각각 나아가 공(功)이 있게 되었습니다.”라고 하였다. 여기서 필성은 신하가 임금을 보필하여 공업을 이룬다는 의미로 볼 수 있다. 벽돌로 만든 월문(月門)이며, 글씨는 돌에 새겼다.
