옥호루 현판

Definition

‘옥호(玉壺)’는 ‘옥으로 만든 호리병’이라는 뜻이지만 이는 ‘옥호빙(玉壺氷)’의 준말로 ‘옥병 안의 얼음’이라는 뜻을 갖는다. ‘깨끗한 마음’을 비유적으로 이르는 말이다. 이 말은 당나라의 유명한 시인 왕창령(王昌齡, 698~755년)의 「부용루송신점(芙蓉樓送辛漸; 부용루에서 신점을 보내며)」라는 시에서 유래했다.

寒雨連江夜入吳 찬비 줄곧 강에 내리는데 밤에 오(吳) 땅에 들어와

平明送客楚山孤 아침에 손님을 보내자니 초산(楚山)이 쓸쓸하네.

洛陽親友如相問 낙양의 친구들이 만약 소식을 묻거든

一片氷心在玉壺 한 조각 얼음 같은 마음이 옥호(玉壺)에 있다 하소.

왕창령이 친구인 신점(辛漸)을 낙양으로 떠나보내면서 지은 이별의 노래인데, 자신의 깨끗하고 순수한 마음을 얼음과 옥병에 비유했다. 현재의 현판은 복원하면서 새로 단 것이다. 원래의 현판이 사진으로 전한다. 글씨는 초서체(草書體)이다.
