광화문통

Definition

경복궁의 정문인 광화문 앞으로 뻗어있는 길인 데서 유래된 명칭으로, 조선시대에 육조거리 또는 육조앞이라고 불리던 곳을 일제강점기(1914년 4월 1일 경기도고시 제7호) 광화문통(光化門通)으로 부르게 되었다. 1926년 조선총독부가 신청사로 이전하면서 광화문이 경복궁 동측으로 이축되었는데 이후 태평통과 함께 이 공간이 식민지기 정치의 중심지가 되었다. 1929년 조선박람회 개최 당시 박람회를 선전하기 위해 갖가지 조명장식과 가장행렬이 이뤄졌다.
