Craig McPherson, former Morton and Falkirk assistant manager, has been issued a six-match ban by the Scottish Football Association (SFA) for headbutting Celtic's women's boss Fran Alonso during last month's Old Firm derby.

McPherson was photographed striking Alonso in the back of the head after the game, prompting outrage and prompting police investigation into the matter.

What happened?

Craig McPherson was given a six match ban for headbutting Celtic coach Niall Quinn to the tune of two points on the scoreboard. It's unfortunate, as he is the club's highest paid player and in the midst of an otherwise stellar record breaking season. Luckily his error was caught on camera before they embarked for Scotland's tallest hill - home to their biggest ballpark - so hopefully other parts of the park and surrounding suburbs can learn from this mistake too! It's unfortunate that it's a no-fee league so this means clubs won't have their best bet for next couple seasons but at least there are silver linings to be had here too! McPherson apologised

Craig McPherson has issued an unreserved apology for headbutting Celtic boss Fran Alonso after their Old Firm draw. McPherson was caught on camera appearing to strike Alonso after Celtic scored a late equaliser.

After the full-time whistle at Broadwood Stadium, there were chaotic scenes. McPherson approached Alonso from behind and appeared to aim a headbutt at him.

Today, the SFA ruled that McPherson had violated Disciplinary Rule 77 and issued him a six-match ban. This suspension will begin immediately and apply across all competitions.

McPherson will miss the Hoops' next match against Celtic, a SWPL contest at Excelsior Stadium on Thursday. Currently second in the league, eight points behind leaders Glasgow City and one ahead of their rivals, McPherson will not play in that contest.

McPherson’s ban

On Thursday, the Scottish FA handed McPherson a six-match ban for his involvement in an incident that followed last month's Old Firm draw. He acknowledged violating SFA disciplinary rule 77, which states team staff must act in the interests of Association Football and prohibits violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening or abusive language or behavior.

He appeared to aim a headbutt at the back of Alonso's head as they were shaking hands, with Celtic ultimately salvaging a point with Caitlin Hayes' last-gasp equaliser. Following the match Alonso said he felt insulted and angry after being called a 'little rat'.

At the end of March, Sky Sports captured footage of McPherson butting Alonso from behind as players and staff exchanged greetings. McPherson appeared to aim a headbutt at Alonso's back during this exchange.

Police Scotland investigation

Celtic and Rangers are two of the greatest clubs in world football, yet tensions often rise when they meet. That was certainly the case last night as a fiery end to a match between their Scottish women's sides saw one Rangers coach headbutt Celtic manager Fran Alonso at Broadwood Stadium.

Sky Sports captured the incident and Alonso later claimed he was called "a little rat" during it. Police Scotland have launched an investigation into the incident, with Celtic calling it a "hugely concerning" occurrence which falls far below any acceptable standard.

According to reports, Scottish FA compliance officer Martin Black was made aware of the incident and will provide an official update on any disciplinary action taken. However, no decision has yet been made; instead, a disciplinary hearing will take place on April 13th.
