The Gaya Confederacy existed during the same period as the Three Kingdoms. It emerged out of the Byeonhan Confederacy, located in the south-central region of the Korean peninsula, between Baekje to the west and Silla to the east. It was annexed by Silla in 532. It is from this state which the Korean instrument, gayageum, gets its name.
