Episode 5: 호박목걸이
Synopsis
메리는 어렸을 때부터의 어머니의 호박목걸이를 좋아했고. 그녀가 가정에서 독립 할 때 어머니는 그 목걸이를 메리에게 선물로 주었다. 그러나 메리는 아시아 순회 공연을 떠나기 얼마 전에 이 목걸이의 구슬들을 잃어버렸고, 몹시 서운했던 마음을 일본에서 만난 미래의 남편 앨버트에게 이야기 했다. 앨버트는 며칠 후 아름다운 호박 목걸이를 그녀에게 선물한다. 호박에 대한 한국인들의 각별한 애정을 이야기해 주면서....... 메리는 일생 동안 이 목걸이를 간직했고, 노년에는 이것을 그녀의 한국에 대한 추억의 표상으로 삼았다. 메리가 그녀의 한국 생활을 기술한 자서전을 썼을 때 책의 제목을 ‘호박 목걸이’라고 했으며 책에 담은 이야기 하나 하나를 목걸이의 구슬에 대응시켰다. 1982년 메리 테일러가 세상을 떠난 후 그녀가 남긴 ‘호박 목걸이’ 유고를 아들 브루스 테일러가 정리하여 1992년에 출간했다. 메리가 목에 걸었던 호박 목걸이는 그녀의 손녀인 제니퍼가 테일러 가의 다른 유물들과 함께 2016년에 서울시에 기증했다. 이 호박 목걸이는 현재 서울역사박물관에서 소장하며, 딜쿠샤(앨버트 테일러 가옥)에서 전시하고 있다.
