My dear Doctor,	박사님께,
We are in pretty bad straights here in Seoul Station, financially and unless some help comes our work will be terribly crippled. We have, by great effort, got our school work to its present condition and it would be disastrous to the same to shut up the school now: yet we face the question that we have no money. The money for the boys' school runs out this month; for our girls' school it will run out before long. You have already seen the appeal sent home by Seoul Station and signed by myself in behalf of Seoul Station, of which a copy was sent to you. I had certainly expected that letter would bring relief: but it has not come: and the question that confronts us now is that of immediately stopping the school. We have decided to continue the schools by borrowing the money for one or two months because we do not believe that the Church will allow the schools to be closed. The Board, as you know, published part of the appeal in The Church at Home and Abroad, and now I write to ask you whether you cannot get your people to come to our help. The people of your church have always shown a peculiar interest in the work in Korea, have continued to hear from it from time to time; and I do believe the simple statement of the condition of affairs in Seoul Station at the present time would at once bring forth a response that would see to it that our work went on.	우리 서울지부는 재정적으로 큰 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 원조(援助)를 받지 못한다면 우리의 사역은 심각한 타격을 입게 될 것 같습니다. 열심히 노력한 결과, 이곳에 학교를 개교했고 지금까지 유지되었습니다만 학교가 이제 문을 닫게 된다면 그것은 매우 불행한 일이 될 것입니다. 우리는 현재 자금이 없다는 문제에 봉착해 있습니다. 남학교(男學校)의 운영 자금은 이 달에 다 떨어져 버릴 겁니다. 또한 여학교(女學校) 운영 자금 역시 오래지 않아 다 소모될 것입니다. 박사님께서는 이곳 서울 지부에서 제 서명으로 본국으로 발송한 호소문을 읽어보신 것으로 알고 있습니다. 저는 그 문서의 사본을 박사님께 직접 보내드렸습니다. 저는 그 서신을 통해 도움을 얻을 수 있으리라 기대하고 있었습니다만 지금까지 별다른 도움을 받지 못했습니다. 지금 우리가 직면하고 있는 문제는 이제 곧 학교 운영을 중단해야 한다는 것입니다. 우리는 한 두 달 동안 자금을 차용해서라도 학교운영을 지속해 나가야 한다고 결정을 내렸습니다. 교회에서 학교 문이 닫히도록 내버려두지 않으리라 믿기 때문입니다. 박사님께서도 아시다시피 본부에서는 그 호소문의 일부분을 『본토와 해외의 교회』지(紙) (The Church at Home and Abroad)에 게재(揭載)하였습니다. 그리고 저는 박사님께서 담당하고 계시는 분들이 우리를 도울 수 있도록 해 주실 수 있는지 박사님께 부탁드리기 위해 이 편지를 쓰고 있습니다. 박사님 교회에 계신 분들은 늘 한국에서의 사역에 대해 특별한 관심을 보였으며 우리 사역에 대한 소식을 때때로 접하고 있었다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 이곳 서울지부의 현재 상황이 간략히 전해지기만 하면 우리의 사역이 지속되게 할만한 반응이 즉각적으로 일어나리라 믿습니다.
I have only mentioned, at the present time, the school work, because that was brought up at a meeting yesterday afternoon; and the only way that we could continue the school was by several of us agreeing to make ourselves personally responsible for a certain portion and to arrange to borrow the money for one or two months.	어제 오후의 한 회의에서 교육 사업에 대한 문제가 제기 되었었기에 이 문제에 대해서만 말씀드렸습니다. 우리 중 몇 사람이 일정액에 대해서 책임을 지기로 하고 한두 달 동안 자신에게 할당된 금액을 차용하도록 하는 것이 우리가 학교운영을 지속해 나갈 수 있는 유일한 방법입니다.
The former letter that went into more detail will show more plainly the needs. In the educational class, out of $1,035 asked by the Mission and appropriated by the Board, by cutting down various other items, we were able to apply to that class $461.25. In the day schools for which we are pledged to the native church to assist in eight schools to the tune of $86.50, we were only able to give $26.00, The training class work was practically cut to nothing: the natives will bear that In itinerating we need about $300.00 more to run to the end of the year; and in sarang work we need about $75.00.	지난 번 편지에서 이 문제에 대해 보다 자세히 말씀드렸었는데 그 편지 내용이 우리에게 필요한 것을 더욱 명백히 보여 주리라 생각됩니다. 교육 예산으로, 선교부에서 요구했고 본부에서 승인한 1,035불에서 여러 항목이 삭감됨에 따라 우리는 교육 예산으로 461.25불을 신청할 수 있었습니다.
I know the number of call that you have; but I really feel that if this were placed before your church, your people would do something: and if your church does anything, I would ask that the amount sent be sent through the Board with the statement that it is to be in addition to the sum granted by the Board this year, so as to make up the actual needs. I cannot but believe that if you will lay this matter before your people they will help at this time.	박사님께서는 여기저기서 도와달라는 요청을 받고 계시다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그렇지만 저희 사정이 박사님 교회에 알려지게 된다면 박사님 교회 분들은 분명히 저희를 도와 주실 것이라 생각됩니다. 박사님과 함께 있는 분들에게 이 일을 알게 해 주시면 그분들이 이번에 도움을 주시리라 믿어 의심치 않습니다.
