We are getting down to translating and other work now and while I had stated definitely, as perhaps you will remember that I could not consent to continue on the Board of Translators if they did not consent to put in sessions both morning and afternoon, the distance across the city is such that no little waste of time would be entailed if double sessions were to be held, so that for the time being we have compromised on one session which is a full four hours long and the members of the Board have agreed to put in considerable time in preparation in the afternoon. It was found, however that Mr. Reynolds work on his house would forbid his making the necessary preparation for the Board so the Board decided to postpone the beginning of their meetings until Nov. 11th or 12th. This gave me a full two weeks free from Board work and the necessity of being in the capital and I started down for the districts of Kim Po, Tong Jin and Song Do. You will see from the minutes of the Mission that being to the necessity of my presence in Seoul so much of the time and for such continuous work it was deemed best that Mr. Sharp should take over the Whang Hai Do field. It was a long while before I could feel that I could consent to this but rather than make formal protest and an appeal, I laid the matter before the other members of the Mission and allowed them to decide. Song Do is the ancient capital of Korea, the second largest city in the country and from the commercial standpoint, as it is the center of the genseng trade, the most important city in the country. It has always been in the minds of the older members of the Mission that as this point either another station should be started or when the rail roads are running that one or two members of Seoul Station should have their residences there. We had several years ago, quite a little local work in the city, but when the Southern Methodists entered with such large promise of reinforcements and took up the work, we left our local work go to them, as we were not then prepared to send a foreigner there. Owing to unforseen circumstances they have been unable to take the work as they had hoped and it was partially due to the fact that our Mission is now reconsidering the advisability of such a step, that Song Do, which adjoins my former work in this section of the province was assigned t! o me. The balance of this section of the work which is now under my care comprises the counties of Ko Yang, Kyo Hwa, Pong Duk, Kim Po, Tong Jin and Song Do. In all of these except Pong Duk we have established work and it was to visit the field on the farther side of the river from Seoul, Kim Po and Tong Jin and to look over the new assignment of Song Do that I took this last trip.	송도는 한국의 옛 수도이며, 나라 안에서 두 번째로 넓은 도시인데, 상업상의 견지로 볼 때, 인삼 무역의 중심지로써 나라 안에서 가장 중요한 도시입니다. 이런 관점에서 선교부의 오랜 회원들의 마음 속에는 항상, 또 다른 지부가 시작되어야 하거나 또는 철길이 건설 중일 때, 서울지부의 한 두 회원이 거기에 거주해야 한다는 생각이 자리잡고 있습니다. 저희는 여러 해 전에 그 도시의 아주 작은 지방 사역을 하고 있었습니다만, 남감리교가 그 사역을 넘겨 받아 다시 강화시킨다는 굳은 약속을 받고, 그들에게 저희의 지방 사역을 남겨주고 떠났습니다. 그때 저희는 그곳에 외국인을 보낼 준비가 되어 있지 않았습니다. 불투명한 상황 때문에, 그들은 그들이 희망했던 것처럼 그 사역을 수행할 수 없었습니다. 그것은 부분적으로 저희 선교부가 현재 그런 단계의 타당성을 재 인식하고 있다는 사실 때문이었습니다. 즉 지역 경계 상으로 저의 이전 사역과 인접하고 있던 송도가 제게 할당되었던 것입니다. 지금 제가 돌보는 중에 있는 사역지는 고양, 교화, 봉덕, 김포, 동진, 송도와 같은 군(郡)들을 포함하고 있습니다. 이 군들 가운데 봉덕을 제외하고 저희는 모두 사역을 수행했고, 저의 최근 여행은 서울에서부터 강을 따라 김포, 동진 그리고 송도라는 새로운 할당지역까지 이르는 전 지역을 방문하는 것이었습니다.
In the February previous to your arrival here I had visited these two sections of Kim Po and Tong Jin and on this visit I had been permitted to examine a large number and to admit about 100 catechumens and baptize about 20. Since that time these sections had received no episcopal oversight, although they had the advantage of visits from some of the natives, accompanied sometimes by one of the younger missionaries. In addition to this section suffered more severely from famine than almost any other part of Korea, and this famine, as perhaps. You know, lasted two years, forcing many of the people to leave their homes and take up their residence in the more mountainous parts of the county. Whole villages were almost desolated and for quite a while it was almost impossible to gather anything like enough Christians for a religious service. Since my return to Korea, continual demands of the Board of Translators together with the prolonged investigation into the Ron Catholic t! roubles in Whang Hai Do prevented my visiting these sections, but I, from time to time sent some of our best leaders to visit them and had the local leaders up to see me in Seoul almost once a month so as to keep in touch with the work and direct it from the capital. The two that needed to be disciplined were a young man who had fallen into grievious sin of a very serious nature and had fled the country and a middle aged man, who in the time of the famine had lost his all and had been compelled to hire himself out to a non-Christian farmer. His master refuses to allow him to attend Church services and we suspended him for six months.	치리를 받을 필요가 있는 사람은 두 명인데, 한 명은 젊은 남자로 그는 매우 심각한 죄를 짓고 시골로 도망을 갔고, 또 한 사람은 중년 남자로 기근 때 자신의 모든 것을 잃어버리고 한 비기독교인 농부에게 고용되어 있는 사람입니다. 그의 주인이 그가 예배에 참석하는 것을 허락하지 않아 저희는 6개월 동안 그의 교회 출석을 금지했습니다.
Whether it is that baptism and the Lord's supper have given added strength or whether it simply shows that we were led aright in baptizing when we visited these sections before or not, I do not pretend to say, but with a membership of over 100 in an infant church that had been left to itself for all this time, I think the above is a very encouraging record. The catechumens also made a vary good showing. Some of them had been growing in knowledge and we believe in grace and with a few new believers we had on the whole trip 130 applicants for baptism, most of whom had been in the catechumenate for over two years and all of whom, with perhaps the exception of half a dozen had been professing Christians for from two to five years. Of these it was our privilege to baptise 82 leaving a balance in the catechumens. Mrs. Underwood accompanied me in this trip and was able to meet the women, encouraging and instructing them.	세례와 성만찬이 [교인들의] 믿음을 더 강화했는지 그렇지 않은 지와, 저희가 이 지역을 전에 방문했을 때 올바로 세례를 베풀었는지 그렇지 않은지 하는 문제에 대해서는 저는 아무 말씀도 드리지 못합니다. 그러나 설립된 이후 줄곧 홀로 남겨졌던 한 어린 교회가 100명이 넘는 교인을 가지고 있다는 것은 매우 용기를 주는 기록입니다. 학습교인들 역시 매우 좋은 결과를 보이고 있습니다. 그들 중 몇은 지식이 더해졌고, 새 신자가 늘었고, 여행기간 중 130명의 세례 지원자를 얻었는데, 그들 중 대부분은 2년 이상 요리문답반에 있었고, 그들 모두는 아마 6명을 제외하고는 2년에서 5년 동안 기독교인임을 고백했습니다. 저희는 이들 가운데 82명에게 학습문답 과정을 하고, 세례를 베푸는 특권을 가졌습니다. 제 아내가 이 여행에 동행하여 많은 여성들을 만나 그들에게 용기를 주고 교육했습니다.
On this trip, we organized one new group and we are planning before the year closes for the organization of three more. We also hope to secure the help of the native Christian in these sections for a vigorous winter campaign among the unreached villages. We tried a little of this work ourselves and found most responsive companies wherever we went. The unstable condition of the government and the absolute impossibility of putting reliance in any officer seems to be making the people more ready to put their trust in God and in Christ. We found great need of instruction in the truths of the Gospel down in these sections, especially among the women and at the last meeting of the Station, Miss Barrett was asked to spend some time teaching the leading women there and if Mrs. Underwood's health will permit she will also pay them a visit during the winter.
Work throughout the sections assigned to Seoul Station is looking up. Mr. Clark is actively engaged in city work from which we are seeing immediate results, but of course it is to be remembered that work in the capital is harder than almost anywhere else.	서울지부에 할당되어 있는 이 지역들 전체의 사역은 날로 발전하고 있습니다. 클라크 씨는 도시 사역에 활동적으로 종사하고 있는데, 저희는 거기에서 즉각적인 결과들을 보고 있습니다. 그러나 기억할 것은, 수도에서의 사역이 대부분 다른 어느 지역에서보다 더 어렵다는 것입니다.
