I received a letter from Mr. Grant and another from Dr. Lambuth asking for a paper on an object lesson (in self-support) in a new field", and I have been urged to make preparations to be present to read the same. He also speaks of my taking my vacation then rather than a year and a half later. Mrs. Underwood wrote you while I was in the country as to whether the vacation could be pushed forward. I would beg however to state that I do not think it possible for me to take my vacation at this time. The work is growing so fast on all sides, and so many of our missionaries are or will be at home that I feel it would not be right to take my furlough before at least the time when it would be regularly due. |
(뉴욕에서 1889년 10월 10일 수령됨) 그랜트 씨와 램부스 박사에게서 편지 한 통씩을 받았습니다. 두 분 다 “새로운 사역지에서 얻은 (자립에 관한) 사실적 교훈”(An object lesson (in self support) in a new field)을 주제로 하여 글을 써 달라고 하였습니다. 그리고 제가 참석해서 그 글을 읽을 수 있도록 준비 해 달라는 부탁을 받았습니다. 그리고 제 휴가를, 일년 반정도 후(後)가 아닌 그 때 갖는 것이 좋겠다고 합니다. 제 아내는 제가 지방에 가 있는 동안 휴가가 앞당겨질 수 있는지 여쭈어 보기 위해 박사님께 편지를 보내 드린 적이 있었습니다. 제 생각으로는, 지금 휴가를 갖는 것은 불가능할 것 같습니다. 모든 사역은 너무도 빠르게 성장해 가고 있는데 우리측 선교사들 중에서는 너무 많은 사람이 지금 본국에 가 있거나 앞으로 본국에 갈 예정이어서, 정규 휴가 기간이 되기도 전에 제가 휴가를 갖는 것은 옳지 않다고 생각합니다. |
I have written to Mr. Grant stating that I do not think it at all possible for me to be present at the meeting, and that the only way would be for me to make a special trip to New York and back again from conference, an out-lay of money that I do not think would be warranted. I write this to you now that you you may not lay the matter of my taking my furlough at this time before the board. In case the way should be opened up as far as expenses are concerned, and it should be deemed wise to go to this expense would I have the Board's permission to absent myself from the field to attend the conference? |
그래서 저는 답장을 보내어, 그랜트 씨에게 그 모임에 참석할 수 없을 거라고 했습니다. 그러면서 만일 그렇게 되려면, 제가 특별히 뉴욕으로 가서 총회에 참석한 후 다시 돌아오는 것밖에는 방법이 없다고 했습니다. 그런데 그런 경비의 지출을 허가 받게 되리라고는 생각되지 않습니다. 박사님께서 본부에 계신 분들에게 제 휴가에 대한 이야기를 말씀하지 않으시기를 바라는 마음에서 이 편지를 쓰고 있습니다. 만일, 비용 지출 문제가 해결되고, 제가 다녀오는 것이 좋겠다는 판단이 선다면, 본부에서는 제가 이곳의 자리를 비우고 총회에 참석하는 것을 허락해 주시겠습니까? |
