2019 Winter Personal Essay

GGHS 2019 Winter - Team 5

Why did you join this camp?

About this time last year, I remember spending my winter vacation very meaningful and informative. That's because I participated in the Global Issue Forum camp, which is held steadily in schools. The camp will be held for a total of three days, with each student choosing an interesting topic and then gathering together to discuss, explore and present the same topic. We get a big topic to deal with a variety of topics. Then, we set a small topic for each group to work on. The main topic we received at this camp was ‘Ganghwa’s Cultural and Natural Heritage'. I think, We could learn more historical facts about Ganghwado Island, our hometown.

Why did you choose this topic?

The issue of human rights is a continuing social sphere. After reading a book about human rights with friends interested in the same side, the media discussed whether to side with the socially weak or to remain neutral. I wanted to go further and investigate human rights abuses in our history, find out how the media reported them, and how the media presented historical events at that time, and compare them to the current national media.

What kind of role did you play in the team?

I participated in this camp for the second time. And this time, I had many first grade friends. so I'm not a team leader, but I've come up with a lot of ideas and actively tried to get our group on the right track. In order to proceed efficiently, we each took charge of a small topic, researched and arranged what we would put on the Wiki. II explored it and arranged about reasons divided in both sides, 개화파 and 위정척사파 After Ganghwa treaty and The similarity between 위정척사파 and conservative media. I also had an idea conference for the final day of the presentation. We wanted to have a communicative presentation and thought constantly about it. When I participated in this global camp, it was new and nice to try something that I couldn't normally relate to.

What are your future hopes for the camp?

It was a bit difficult for us to prepare everything perfectly for the time we were given. Unlike our desire to perfect it, we were very short of time. I hope that students who participate in the camp will have enough time to think about it, talk about it and do some activities.
