詣禮部。是日陰。辦事吏王瑍。持牌子來叫臣。其牌書仰喚朝鮮漂海夷官崔溥。火速赴司毋違云云。臣從王瑍。過南薰鋪。至文德坊。城之正陽門內。建大明門。門之左爲文德坊。右爲武功坊。正陽三層。大明二層也。行至禮部。主客司郞中李魁，主事金福，王雲鳳等。承尙書周洪謨，左侍郞倪，右侍郞張之命。謂臣曰。明早引入朝。給賞衣服。可易吉服。事畢便打發回去。臣對曰。我漂海時。不勝風浪。盡撒行李。僅守此喪服來。無他吉服。且我當喪卽吉。恐不合於禮。且以喪服入朝。義又不可。請大人斟酌禮制。更示何如。李郞中將臣言歷議。良久。使吏鄭春謂臣曰。明早受賞時。無展禮節次。可令你從吏代受。明後日謝 恩時。你親拜皇帝。不可不參云云。臣還玉河館。夕。孫錦又以粟二斗，醬瓜一器來餽之。有一人駈犀羊。過玉河館門而去。其一羊有四角。二羊毛長垂地。
예부에 이르렀습니다.
이 날은 흐렸습니다. 사무를 주관하는 서리 왕환(王煥)이 패자(牌子)를 가지고 와서 신을 불렀습니다.
그 패자 속의 글은, 바다를 표류해 온 조선의 관원 최부를 불러 급히 관사(官司)로 가게 하라. 어김이 없어야 할 것이다. 운운하였습니다.
신은 왕환을 따라 남훈포(南薰鋪)를 지나서 문덕방(文德坊)에 이르렀습니다. 성의 정양문(正陽門) 안에 대명문(大明門)을 세웠는데, 대명문의 왼쪽은 문덕방(文德坊), 오른쪽은 무공방(武功坊)이었고, 정양문은 3층, 대명문은 2층이었습니다.
가서 예부에 이르니, 주객사낭중(主客司郞中) 이괴(李魁), 주사(主事) 김복(金福), 왕운봉(王雲鳳) 등이 상서(尙書), 예(倪) 좌시랑(左侍郞), 장(張) 우시랑(右侍郞)의 명을 받들어 신에게 말하기를,
“내일 아침에 함께 입조하면 의복을 상으로 줄 것이니, 길복(吉服)으로 바꾸어 입도록 하오. 일을 마치면 즉시 돌아갈 수 있도록 할 것입니다”라고 하였습니다.
신이 대답하기를, “나는 표류할 때 풍랑을 견디지 못하여 행장을 모두 버리고 이 상복(喪服)만을 겨우 입고 왔으므로 다른 길복은 없습니다. 또 내가 친상을 당하여 길복을 입는 것이 예(禮)에 맞지 않을 듯하고, 상복 차림으로 입조하는 것은 의(義)에 맞지 않으니 청컨대 대인께서는 예제(禮制)를 참작하여 지시를 바꾸어 주시는 것이 어떻겠습니까?”라고 하였습니다.
이(李) 낭중은 신의 말을 여러 사람과 의논하다 한참을 지난 후에 서리 정춘(鄭春)을 시켜 신에게, “내일 아침 상 받을 때는 예를 차리는 절차가 없으니 따라온 아전으로 하여금 대신 상을 받도록 하고, 모레 황제의 은혜를 사례할 때는 당신이 몸소 황제에게 배례(拜禮) 해야하니 참석하지 않을 수 없습니다” 라는 등의 말을 전하였습니다.
신은 옥하관으로 돌아왔습니다. 저녁에 손금(孫錦)이 또 좁쌀 2되와 장아찌 1그릇을 보내왔습니다.
어떤 사람이 여러 마리의 양떼를 몰고 옥하관 문을 지나갔는데, 그중 한 마리는 뿔이 네 개나 달려 있고 두 마리는 털이 길어 땅바닥에 드리웠습니다.
18th Day. Attending the Ministry of Rites. This day was cloudy.
Foreman Wang Huan, carrying a placard, came and summoned me. On the placard was written, “We summon Ch’oe Pu, the barbarian official of Korea who drifted across the sea, to come to this office in great haste.”
I followed Wang Huan past the Nan-hsün Stop to Wen-te Ward. Inside the Cheng-yang Gate of the wall stood the Ta-ming Gate. To the left of the gate was Wen-te Ward; to the right Wu-kung Ward. Cheng-yang had three stories, Ta-ming two. We arrived at the Ministry of Rites.
Li K’uei, Senior Secretary of the Bureau of Receptions, and Chin Fu and Wang Yün-feng, Administrative Secretaries, receiving commands from Minister Chou Hung-mo, Left Vice Minister Ni, and Right Vice Minister Chang,12 said to me, “At dawn you will be taken to Court to receive awards of clothing. You should change your clothing to festive dress. When that is over we shall send you off to go back.” I replied, “When I was drifting at sea, I was overwhelmed by the wind and waves and let all my baggage go. I came here barely having saved these mourning clothes; I have no festive dress. At any rate, I am afraid that to be festive when I should be in mourning would not measure up to what is proper. To enter Court in mourning clothes, moreover, could not loyally be done. I beg of your Excellencies to weigh the ceremony; would it be possible to change your instructions ?”
Senior Secretary Li talked about what I had said in detail and for some time and had the sub-official Cheng Ch’un say to me, “When you receive the awards tomorrow morning, there will not be an elaborate performance of ritual. You may order a subordinate officer to receive them for you. When you acknowledge the Imperial graciousness the day after tomorrow, you yourself will bow to the Emperor. You must take part in that.” I returned to Jade River House.
In the evening, Sun Chin came again and presented to me two pecks of grain and one container of melons in soy sauce. A man drove a flock of sheep past the gate of Jade River House. One of the sheep had four horns, and two of them had hair so long it hung to the ground.
