Northwest of Hsi-hsiang Station was a broad, level plain, which was the Ch’ien-t’ang River. In flood tides it is a lake, but when the tide ebbs, it is land. On the 18th Day of every Eighth Month there is a big tide with great waves, and the people of Hang-chou watch the bore.5

We left the boats in front of the station, went ashore, got into carriages, and went on. In about ten li we came to the Che River. We got into boats again and crossed.
 +
The river twists and turns, and the mountains on the side also have the effect of deflecting its waves; that is why it is called Che-chiang, Twisting River ... The width of the river is about eight or nine li. In length, it extends from Fuchien-lu in the southwest and enters the sea in the northeast. The wall built by Hua Hsin to hold off the tide extends from T'uan-yü-tsui to Fan Village, approximately thirty li, and then goes to Fu-yang County, making a total of over sixty li. Of stone construction, it is still as good as new. For that reason, the river is also called the Coin Wall (Ch’ien-tang) River.6
 +
I came to that wall, landed again, and continued on foot. In the west we saw Liu-ho Pagoda, overlooking the river bank. We went past Yen-sheng Temple and Che-chiang Station and came to the south gate of the wall of Hang-chou. The wall was double, the gate multiple, and the gate had a tower of three stories. We went inside the wall, passed Wen-k’uei Gate, Ling-shun-kung, Suhsien Gate, Ch'eng-ch'ing Gate, Nan-ch'a-yuan, Yu-sheng Hall, T’u-ti Shrine, and Chih-sung-fang Stop, and came to Wu-lin Station. It was approximately ten li from the gate of the wall to that station.
 +
Chai Yung had accompanied us for a great distance, over one thousand li, in which, except a one-day stop because of rain, we had not delayed and had sometimes travelled at night. Nevertheless, the Grand Defending Overseer, Chang Ch’ing," charged Yung with being dilatory and had him flogged.

In the evening, Yang Hsui-lu, the Station Master, came with food and paid his respects.
