We went on, past Yü-kuan Station and Pan-shan Stop. Northwest of the road was the old wall of Hai-yang, north of which was Lieh-t'o Mountain. The mountain was high and majestic, the boldest among the mountains. We passed the Chang-ku-lao River and came to the Niang-tzu River. The day was already growing dark. On the river bank, where there were three or four houses, we borrowed utensils to make a meal. We passed more than ten villages and stopped the carriages at a road whose name I do not know.

5th Day. Passing Yü-kuan Station. This day was fair.

We passed Ch'ing-yün-te-lu Gate and went out the east gate of the wall. We passed Hsing-shan Stop and Pei-shih Stop and came to Yü-kuan Stop. The stop had formerly been a pass which had now been moved to Shan-hai-kuan. East of the stop was the Yü River, and Lin-yü Mountain was above the river. When Kogury> was being brought to submission in the K’ai-huang period [581-600] of Sui, that was the Yü-kuan from which Han Wang Liang led troops.33 We went on, past Yü-kuan Station and Pan-shan Stop.
