목포 부두 근대 상가주택

목포 부두 근대 상가 주택은 목포 사람들이 영해 잔교라고 부르는 옛 부두와 근접해 있는 상가 건물이다. 1949년에 신축한 것이다. 이 건물은 사거리 교차점에 세워진 위치적 특징이 건축의 형태에 그대로 반영되어 있다. 도로 면에 맞춰 전면을 사선 형태로 만들었고, 좌우를 대칭으로 하여 안정감을 주며 1층의 3면 모두에 입구를 두어 물건을 진열하고 옮기기 편하게 하였다. 내부 건축 자재로 붉은 벽돌을 이용하였고, 2층에는 수직형 목조창을 만들었다. 목포 선창가에 남아 있는 상가 건물 가운데에서 원형이 잘 보존된 대표적인 건축물이다.

이 건물 일대는 각종 어선들의 출입이 빈번한 곳이어서 인근에는 어선에 필요한 용품을 판매하는 상가들이 많이 들어서 있는데, 1949년에 세운 이 건물은 해방 이후 목포 선창가의 사회상을 보여 주는 유적이다.

Early Modern Commercial Building of Mokpo Port
National Registered Cultural Heritage No.718-10

This Early Modern Commercial Building of Mokpo Port was a store building situated next to the old pier, locally known as Yeonghae Pier. It was built in 1949. The positional features of the building being constructed at the crossroads are well reflected in its architecture. The front is made diagonally in line with the road surface, and the left and right are symmetrical, creating an impression of stability. The entrances are placed on all three sides of the first floor to make it easy to display and move things. Red bricks were used as the interior building material, and the second floor features vertical wooden windows. This archetype is well preserved compared to the other store buildings remaining on Mokpo Pier.

As many fishing boats were moored near the area around the building, there were also many shops selling goods needed by fishermen in the vicinity. The building clearly shows the social image of Mokpo Pier in post-liberation Korea.
