목포소방조

Definition

목포소방조 (木浦消防組, 1899)는 목포 개항 2년 후인 1988년 10월 3일 목포소방조가 발족된 이후 1910년 1월 1일 공설 목포소방조 설치 인가되었으며, 이후 1937년 1월 1일 소방조에서 경방단으로 개칭되었다. 개항 이후 목포는 전라도의 주요지역으로 부각되었으며 소방조 활동도 먼저 시작하였다. 개항 이후 목포에 정착한 일본인들은 통치기반을 다지기 위해 행정 보조기관으로 목포소방조를 창설했으며 당시 목포소방조 간부들은 목포지역사회에서 성공적으로 정착한 일본인 실업가들이었다. 이는 소방조 활동이 일본인들이 소유한 정미소, 면화공장 등의 화재예방을 위해서였기 때문이다.
