목포천주교전교

Definition

목포천주교전교(木浦天主敎傳敎)는 1897년 5월 8일 전북 김제의 '수류성당'으로 부터 분리된 전남 지역이 새로운 구역으로 설정되면서 부터이며, 이를 계기로 1898년 7월 2일 목포부 산정동에 '목포성당'이 설립되었다. 이로써 전남지역에서는 최초로 세워진 성당이며, 광주 대교구의 모태가 되었다. 1951년 '경동성당'을 분리함과 동시에 '목포성당'은 '천주교 목포 산정동 성당'으로 개칭되었다. 이곳은 또한 '레기오 마리애'(Regio Marie, The Legion of Mary)의 전교의 근거지였기 때문에 한국 천주교의 성지로도 통한다. '레기오'마리애'는 라틴어로 '마리아의 군단'이라는 의미이다. 천주교를 통한 교화와 전교를 목적으로 하는 단체였다. 이 단체는 1953년 5월 31일 목포에서 창단되어 산정동 본당과 '경동성당'을 중심으로 활동을 했다. 이들을 위한 기념관이 '산정동 성당'에 조성되어 있다.
