2007년 시작된 제주올레는 현재 총연장 437km, 27개 코스(본섬 21개, 부속섬 및 알파 코스 포함)를 통해 제주의 해안과 마을을 따라 섬 전체를 하나로 잇는 일주 트레일이다. ‘올레’는 큰길에서 집으로 들어가는 작은 골목길을 뜻하는 제주 방언으로, 제주와 세계를 연결하는 길이 되기를 바라는 의미를 담고 있다. 각 코스는 평균 4~6시간이 소요되며, 마을길, 해안도로, 숲속 오솔길 등 다양한 길로 구성되어 상업적 관광지와 무관한 제주의 일상적 아름다움을 만날 수 있다. 제주올레를 걷기 위해서는 운동화나 트레킹화, 충분한 물, 모자, 선글라스 등을 준비하는 것이 좋다. 올레패스포트(2만 원)를 구입하면 각 코스의 시작점, 중간 지점, 종점에 설치된 스탬프를 찍으며 기록을 남길 수 있다. 올레패스포트는 제주공항, 제주올레 여행자센터, 제주올레 공식 안내소에서 구입하거나 ‘올레패스’ 앱에서 모바일 패스포트로 구매할 수 있다. 27개 코스를 모두 완주하면 완주증과 완주메달이 수여된다.

이러한 걷기 여행 문화와 더불어, 제주도는 ‘2040 플라스틱 제로 제주’ 정책을 통해 환경 보호를 관광 전반으로 확대하고 있다. ‘푸른컵’ 서비스는 제주에 방문한 관광객들에게 다회용컵을 대여해주는 서비스이다. 제주공항 1층에서 보증금을 내고 7일간 대여할 수 있고, 반납시 보증금은 반환된다. 개인, 단체, 도민, 여행자 등 누구나 제주 전역에서 이용할 수 있으며, 푸른컵 사용시 음료 할인을 해주는 카페도 있다. ‘E-RUN 트립(Eco-Run의 줄임말)’은 친환경, 스포츠, 미션이 결합된 관광 콘텐츠로, 플로깅(조깅하며 쓰레기 줍기), 친환경 제로웨이스트 상점 방문 등의 활동을 포함한다.

Sustainable Jeju Travel

Jeju Island is establishing itself as a sustainable tourism destination where visitors can enjoy nature while protecting it through oreum trekking, the Jeju Olle Trail, and eco-friendly travel programs.

Jeju is home to approximately 360 parasitic cones (oreum) surrounding Hallasan Mountain. Among them, Geomunoreum is the central cone of the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, which forms part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site “Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes.” Standing at 456 meters above sea level with a circumference of 4,551 meters, Geomunoreum is a volcano that formed a lava tube system and holds exceptional geological value. Visits operate on a reservation basis, with options including the summit course (approximately 1 hour), crater course (approximately 2.5 hours), and full course (approximately 3.5 hours). Reservations can be made online on a first-come, first-served basis starting from the first day of the month prior to the desired visit date, and same-day reservations are not possible. Besides Geomunoreum, various parasitic cones such as Yongnunioreum, Abuoreum, and Baegyagioreum are available, each offering unique characteristics and difficulty levels suitable for different fitness levels.

Launched in 2007, the Jeju Olle Trail is a circuit trail that connects the entire island along Jeju’s coasts and villages through a total length of 437 kilometers across 27 courses (comprising 21 main island courses, plus offshore island and alpha courses). “Olle” is a Jeju dialect word meaning a small alley leading from the main road to one’s home, embodying the hope that this trail would connect Jeju with the world. Each course takes an average of 4 to 6 hours and consists of diverse paths including village roads, coastal roads, and forest trails, providing encounters with Jeju’s everyday beauty away from commercial tourist attractions. For walking the Jeju Olle Trail, it is advisable to prepare sneakers or trekking shoes, sufficient water, a hat, and sunglasses. By purchasing an Olle Passport (20,000 won), visitors can collect stamps installed at the starting point, midpoint, and ending point of each course to record their journey. The Olle Passport can be purchased at Jeju International Airport, the Jeju Olle Travel Center, Jeju Olle official information centers, or as a mobile passport through the “Olle Pass” app. Those who complete all 27 courses receive a completion certificate and medal.

Alongside this walking travel culture, Jeju Island is expanding environmental protection throughout tourism through the “2040 Plastic-Free Jeju” policy. The Blue Cup Service provides reusable cups to tourists visiting Jeju. Visitors can borrow cups for 7 days by paying a deposit on the first floor of Jeju International Airport, and the deposit is refunded upon return. Anyone—individuals, groups, residents, or travelers—can use the service throughout Jeju, and some cafes offer beverage discounts when using Blue Cups. “E-RUN Trip” (short for Eco-Run) is an eco-themed travel program combining sports and environmental missions, including activities such as plogging and visiting eco-friendly zero-waste shops.
