The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty are an unparalleled historical record chronicling 472 years of Korean history from King Taejo (r. 1392-1398), the founder of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), through King Cheoljong (r. 1849-1863). Comprising 1,893 volumes across 888 books, this monumental work documents virtually every significant aspect of the Joseon era, including politics, diplomacy, military affairs, economy, society, culture, and natural disasters. As the longest continuous dynastic record by a single kingdom, it stands as the most extensive historical documentation in world history.
The defining characteristic of the Annals lies in their exceptional credibility and objectivity. Court historiographers (sagwan) were entrusted with recording the king’s every action and all court proceedings in draft records (sacho). These historians enjoyed institutional independence and secrecy protections that prevented even the king from reading their writings. This system enabled the court historiographers to practice the principle of recording historical facts truthfully without distortion. After a king’s death, the Office for Annals Compilation (Sillokcheong) was established to compile the Annals using draft records and other official records such as the Daily Records of the Royal Secretariat (Seungjeongwon ilgi).
To ensure preservation, completed Annals were stored in multiple repositories (sago) across the kingdom, including the Office of State Records (Chunchugwan) in the capital. During the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598), most copies were destroyed, but the Jeonju repository’s copy survived, enabling reprinting. Subsequently, copies were maintained at four mountain repositories: Jeongjoksan, Taebaeksan, Jeoksangsan, and Odaesan. Today, the Jeongjoksan and Taebaeksan copies, as well as portions of the Odaesan copy, are housed at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at Seoul National University, while the Jeoksangsan copy remains in North Korea.
The Annals were designated as National Treasure of Korea in 1973 and inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in October 1997, recognizing their universal value. They are celebrated as a treasure of human documentary heritage for their unprecedented temporal scope covering 472 years, encyclopedic breadth encompassing diverse aspects of civilization, and remarkable historical authenticity and reliability.
